Figure Drawing Means I'm Covered in Charcoal

I went to a figure drawing session this week! OH MAN am I rusty with charcoal! Whooo!

I had a pretty rough start, and you can tell from the heavy-handedness that I was a bit frustrated with my results. It wasn't until I switched to pencil that I realized I was working just too darned small for charcoal (each drawing, save a few, is about 8"-11" tall/long ). How silly! I think next time I will try inks if I stay at this size.

Some of those three minutes were actually 1-2 minutes as I fussed with my materials. It takes me a while to get settled at these things if I don't have time to warm up first.

I finally switched to art pencils and suddenly everything got better. LET THIS BE A LESSON TO YOU! Don't be dumb about your medium! Charcoal needs space and time, for me anyways.

Because I was working so small, I was able to do some thumbnailing/experimentation with the last two poses in the time limit, which was nice. Next time I think I will work larger though, so I can really focus on lighting and line quality.

So much fun, though!!

Scuba Diving Comic Book Resume Bonanza!

I just finished with a project for a friend where we turned his Scuba Diving Instructor resume into a 4-page comic book. The story behind it is that he locked his three references in an interrogation/conference room until they write him a resume so awesome he can't possibly NOT get a job.

Here are the visuals without the text. It was pretty tongue-in-cheek in a lot of areas and fun to draw!

It begins with his epic birth and journey toward current day....

Frog Prince

I joined a little illustration group on Facebook full of friends of mine who want to amp up their illustration skills. We have a theme every month-ish and try to make an illustration based on it. This time the theme was "Frog Prince- With a Twist!" and here's my final image.

I wanted to do something silly and my friend Alexandria ( helped me brainstorm this one during a power-brainstorm session.

My favorite part is this:

That frog is a metaphor for my bills right now.

Inktober Doodles

I did a couple of brush pen/ink doodles for Inktober. Here they are! I might turn the little illustration into a painting. WHO KNOWS.

CTN Challenge 2013

Hey folks! I've been doing a lot of tidying up on my portfolio to get ready for CTN this year. This will be the first year I've gone. ANyways, they have these art challenges available for participants and I opted to try my hand at this one.

Here's the process... (minus the thumbnails, which were unusually messy and mostly on napkins this time)

 Color blocking:

At this point,I started shopping it around to colleagues for feedback. Here's another with some tweaks based on critiques:

And, after a final round of tweaking, the finished version!

It was fun to do, whatever happens!
