Spring Break

I have been drawing every day over the break, but I haven't done anything of substance. All kinds of things happened! I got a new job, I've been struggling to get on top of long-neglected housework, attended a mini-LAN party, and rode around in circles on the transit system getting estimates on printing in bulk for a possible Etsy store.

Here are some of the things I've been doing as far as brainstorming paintings for the purpose of selling them.

Here are some very vague environment doodles.
And here are some silly things.

Tomorrow I'm vacuuming and doing a buttload of laundry. Then I am re-painting that one painting from my finals for last term. And then I'm winding down by doing some environment studies (of other people's environments).
My goal is to have at least one decent environment design before the end of next term in my portfolio.

And hopefully this weekend I can do 2 or 3 paintings that can easily be turned into prints for commercial uses. ^_^

A comic!

I am like candy for crazy people. They can't get enough.

I really have to think more about layout and camera angles when I do comics. Personal goal.

More stuff later. I am working on sketches for possible selling purposes!

Finals, finally!

Hey guys! Here are my Costumed Figure finals! I am going to re-do one of them over the break, but otherwise, they're as done as they're going to get.

Whew! Those were a lot of fun and a lot of hard work. Over break, aside from re-doing the third one from the top, I am going to whip out 5 or more paintings and 10 painting ideas, and try to set up an Etsy store! =P Wish me luck.

Memory Pug Monday

Pendleton Ward (http://twitter.com/buenothebear), the creator of Adventure Time , posted a drawing of a pug on Twitter that he drew from memory with the tag #MemoryPugMonday and I thought it would be a fun quick warm-up.

This took about 20 minutes. Just for fun to keep me sane. BACK TO WORK!

Another Year Older

Well, yesterday was my birthday and I spent it doing some relaxing (and even had a nap!). I wound down before bed with some creature design that disintegrated into general doodles. Here they are.

And here is the finished Frankie painting I've done in watercolor with a hint of gouache. It's still a little too tight for what I wanted but it's as close as it's going to get before finals.

Oh, and here is the second-to-final cowboy painting. I'm almost done with the final one.

The next step is to start incorporating textures and patterns into my pieces.

A week from Tuesday, I will post all of the final paintings for you guys to see. Until then, I'm sorry but you'll have to suffer without.

A Day Off

So I took yesterday off from homework and instead just sort of hashed out some comic ideas and then doodled while watching Dollhouse Season 2 (SO. MESSED. UP.)

Here are some doodles.

And then I was critiquing a friend on Deviantart who asked for advice on how to improve his skills at drawing female faces.Of course, my knee-jerk reaction is; draw from life. Draw from life a thousand million times. THIS IS HOW YOU GET BETTER AT DRAWING ANYTHING.

But on top of that there are some other basic things, like understanding form and anatomy (DRAW FROM LIFE), finding rhythms and repetetive shapes, and simplifying and emphasizing characteristic features that factor in.

I'm not sure I helped much (I think I just offended and confused him =( ), but it got me thinking that I haven't tried drawing faces in a while either. So I slapped together a ref page and sat down to do some 30-40sec sketches of each face.

WOW did I fail.  Here, you guys can be amazed at how much not drawing from life for a few months can MURDER YOUR ABILITIES. >.<

The reference sheet

The 40second studies
Some are better than others but all are pretty bad. I do seem to be better at this sort of thing with a pen than with pencil for soem reason (probably because of Quicksketch class) so next time I will try tackling these with microns and see if I can do better. And next time I'll do some manfaces.

Obviously I need more practice! Anyways, back to homework!

Tasty Tasty Color Studies

The past few weeksI've been doing vast numbers of color studies in preparation for my Costumed Figure final project. Here are just a couple of them, to give you a taste. For each painting I do about 3 color studies before I move on to the final, which, if I mess up, sometimes also turns into a color study (a big one on expensive paper...). I am going to be re-doing 4 or 5 paintings. So youc an imagine what kind of work load I'm dealing with.

2011 Hourlies (way late)

I participated in hourly comics day (The day when comics artists draw a comic every hour), but only just got around to finishing/posting them. I chose to do an autobiographical comic because it was easy for me. I did not anticipate this day being as emotionally taxing as it was, so I end up looking like some kind of mad, manic emotional trainwreck. I swear I am not always this way.
