Holidays and Such

Here are some sketches from the last few weeks. I've got a bunch scanned, so I'll be uploading them a little at a time.

The class I did in-class tutoring for this past term had to take a vehicle design and come up with 3 solid design variations on the original. I tried my hand at it while everyone got started.

Here are some sheep I drew while fighting off an anxiety attack.

Preliminary sketch for a t-shirt.

Goblin sharks are best. They are champion huggers.

IKEA Dress Me Up Challenge

Hey guys!

I participated last month in a scholarship challenge sponsored by Ikea. I submitted a concept sketch to a panel of judges depicting how I would decorate or "dress up" a standard Ikea Tarva dresser, and was one of 11 finalists chosen to actually bring the design to life.

This was my design idea.

We were then given a box of wood and supplies that, when following the instructors, eventually turned out to be a dresser.

Then I had to get my supplies. The paint place only had a blueish stain, no lavendar, so I ended up having to alter a bunch of colors to achieve the harmony I wanted. My original design was very royal blue, and my final one took a more traditional teal approach.

Here's the blue stain process.

And then I blocked in the colors. I was using teal, turquoise, royal purple and metallic gold.

And finally, the finishing details!

I'd say the whole thing took about 32 hours. I've never done anything like this before, and was SO impressed with what many of the other students did that my mind was blown on several occasions! This was a big group of super talented people!

The dressers are on display at our school gallery until the end of January, then will be on display through February at IKEA. At the end of the February, they'll be auctioned off to benefit the World Forestry Center.

Whew! (And yeah, I realize I totally lost a neck in there. I keep kicking myself over that.)

Sugar Rush Me

I Sugar Rushed myself. This is a SUPER hasty sketch and it definitely has some weird problems. I need to study painting gummy stuff more, too. Anyways, I'll probably end up trying it again later.

I haven't even seen the movie yet! =(

A little warm-up/cool-down I did today around homework.

The Unkissable Cobra Draft One!

Hey guys. The book dummy get-together was awesome. I feel so inspired by the work I saw there, and the feedback was phenomenal. I have a TON of changes to make to this story now. The main ones are that I'm whittling the words down by around half, and the interactions of the cobra with the other animals is going to change a lot. I'll also be completely changing most of the layouts and spreads for the sake of flow and rhythm. There will be a little more comedy put in.

It's going to be fun doing this again!

Here's the first draft of my very first children's book EVER!

Robots and Puppies, Oh My!

Hey guys. I'm hoping to finish off the first, very rough draft of my Children's book this weekend, nd show it to some people and try not to feel like the worst artist ever.

Meanwhile, here are some random pages from my sketchbook this week.

Robots

Here's me playing around with layout in isometric view, and then getting distracted
by a frogbug and then some of the students in the class I'm tutoring in.

Here's a weird old man with a pipe, two worried ghosts and two doggies.

 Here is a... vase.. home?

Back to working on my book! I'll post the full draft sometime this weekend.

The Unkissable Cobra WIP

I'm working on a children's book dummy for a book about a cobra who is looking for someone to explain a kiss to him. He can't seem to get a straight answer, however, as everyone he asks is frightened of him and quickly runs away after giving their response- all explained in terms of things they personally find joy in which the cobra can't relate to.

Here are the first 4 spreads sketched out. I have 6 spreads fairly complete (some are rough).

Star Trek A Friend!

My friend Geno asked me to make him an ID image with him in Star Fleet uniform.

I busted out my ink nib pen for this one and I had forgotten how much I love that tool. I am going to ink EVERYTHING for a while. YUMMMMM.
